An Oni is an incredibly old Japanese depiction of a devil-like figure. This piece captures their chaotic and somewhat disturbing presence, while capturing the amazing color that goes into traditional Japanese works of art
Starting with a rough sketch of basic circles for faces, I used my standard method of making multiple sketches. With each sketch, the piece got cleaner and cleaner. Once I was satisfied, I made the final line art. After the sketches were lined I got straight into coloring. I wanted to try using only the primary colors red, yellow and blue, simply because I felt they outlined the differences in each oni pretty well.
